In 2019, Telford & Wrekin Council declared a climate emergency. It is now working, along with partners, to go carbon neutral by 2030 – and to reduce single-use plastic across the council by 2023!

Funding for climate change and sustainability projects

Telford & Wrekin Council has set up a Climate Change Fund of £100,000 which will be used to help organisations in our Borough to deliver projects aimed at addressing climate change or environmental sustainability.

The fund is open to the following organisations in the borough of Telford and Wrekin:

  • Town and Parish Councils
  • Voluntary and Community groups
  • Faith groups
  • Charities
  • Not for profit organisations
  • Social enterprises
  • Friends of Parks
  • Local Nature Reserves and similar groups
  • Schools
  • Nurseries
  • Parent Teacher Associations
  • School Friends groups
  • Small businesses (having 15 or less FTE employees)

Applications for a wide range of projects will be considered as long as they fall within one of these four categories:

  1. Improve energy efficiency in existing buildings
  2. Provide renewable/low carbon energy generation
  3. Sustainable travel
  4. Reduce waste

Examples of projects include but are not limited to, upgrading of heating systems, boiler replacements, secondary or triple glazing, installing solar panels and battery storage systems, introducing electric bike share schemes, cycle storage, installing a water refill station or improving local recycling of goods.  Further examples and details of what will not be included can be found in the Guidance document.

So if you have a Green idea and need some funding to help get your project off the ground, get your application in now.  You can review the Guidance, Terms and Conditions here

Applicants are required to contribute match funding towards their project such as a grant from another fund or ‘in kind’ funding e.g. volunteers who help in planning or delivering the project. Community organisations can apply for a minimum of £1,500 and a maximum grant of £5,000 with the applicant contributing 20% match funding in cash or in kind.  Small businesses can apply for a maximum grant of £2,500 with the applicant contributing 50% match funding in cash or in kind.

The closing date for applications is noon on Monday 19th April 2021 although the Council does reserve the right to close the Fund earlier.
